If someone ends up writing a software implementation, I still own the patent (and in US Court I can sue for royalties), but the implementer owns the copyright (and can license it as copyleft if they want to) of their own implementation. It's less so about software encoder/decoder licensing and moreso about the patent of the (software-patent licensing) on the encoding itself.Įdit: Ex I can patent an idea (say, I don't know, for the sake of a funny example from Silicon Valley), the ability to perform a search on a compressed data space. "As we are doing software only, not hardware, and we don't make money, we don't license those." "European and French law does not consider 'software-only' patents as valid," said Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of the VideoLAN Organization, told CNET. I mean I'm literally just paraphrasing what VideoLAN people said lmao. And, I've not found a solution.ĭon't even get me started on the "various artists" issues that arise. This has been very labor intensive and frustrating for me. But, as soon as I save it my changes aren't there. Buy somehow, Plex scrambled all my Sinatra CD labels such that they now listed Patsy Cline as the artist name.Īnd, sometimes Plex will not save a change to the album title or artist that I make. For instance, I recently added an old Tony Bennett CD I inherited from my mother. It's a tedious task for which I've not been able to find a solution.Īnd, for reasons I've not been able to determine, every once in a while when I add a new album, Plex ends up scrambling a bunch of other album names in the library. Requiring that I reset the Plex library to prefer local data, and then edit and lock the data, particularly album cover art, for about 10% of my library. And every time I do, Plex scrambles the metadata in my library and makes a mess of it. And, despite backups and rescue media, I have had to reset Windows 10 on several occasions and thus, reinstall Plex. However, my home server has been prone to some strange lockups that keep it from loading Windows on occasion. It takes time but, I've got my library of albums arranged the way I want it and locked down. So, I have set Plex to prefer local metadata and found various sources of that data and entered manually. Many of the CDs we have are not particularly mainstream so, there isn't a great amount of metadata out there for them. That's easier than even having to open up PLEX and go into our library.īUT, the metadata tagging for the CDs has been a real challenge. We actually never use them now since we got two ROKU TVs and have pretty much been streaming. So far it's been easy peazy in terms of ripping and storing.Īdding some 40 or 50 DVDs that I have would just be icing on the cake. Plex seemed to offer a better playing and library option than anything else I could find. I really only wanted it to create a music library that was accessible anywhere in my house for my 400+ CD and 200+ vinyl, collections. I went with Plex Pass and have been pretty pleased. This is nice if Plex on a HTPC is the primary way you watch videos, but there's an advantage here even if you use a streaming box: YouTube is terrible on Apple TV and Roku, because they force a web-based interface on those platforms. Or, if you prefer, there's a third party plugin that lets you browse your YouTube subscriptions right in the Plex interface. Plex has a Watch Later function you can use to queue up videos, kind of like Pocket.
